FAQs for Artists

GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is this?

hireartists.org is a marketplace designed to facilitate creative exchange during the coronavirus era. Built by artists and for artists, we connect buyers with experienced practitioners for the purposes of online instruction or to help with creative and non-creative tasks.

Who is this for? Who can post a service or skill?

hireartists.org is for anyone in the arts who has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 outbreak and seeks to broaden how they sustain themselves during this period.

It is a way for those who have the good fortune to be financially secure to help, and for all of us to stay productive—whether by learning or offering.

Please consider bringing friends, family, or your network onto the site to purchase services as well as sell them. We know there are tens of thousands of people in the arts hurting, but we equally need many people who want to fill their days in lockdown with productive learning and activity.

Does hireartists.org or Sharetribe take a commission from what I earn?

No. You keep everything you earn except for any fees charged by Stripe.

SERVICES FOR OFFER

What types of things can I offer

You can offer anything that can be provided remotely or online: commissioned art and performances, classes and coaching, or assistance with everyday or professional tasks (virtual assistant, IT help, video editing, etc.). Nothing that requires meeting in person may be offered.

We recommend you offer things targeted at the people who are NOT from the artistic community—our hope is that this platform is not a way for us to circulate the same $$ amongst us, but to bring new resources into the community and to help you weather this COVID storm.

We strongly encourage you to offer unique “of-the-moment” services rather than standard gigwork that can be found on other platforms. Be creative…

You can only offer up to a maximum of two different services/skills, and you will need to create a separate posting for each.

The sale, or the offer of sale, of services that are illegal or promote illegal activity, that are sexual in nature, that contain hate speech or symbols or other abuse content cannot be offered. Please be safe, and respect other people’s boundaries as well.

Please do not use this site for direct fundraising. It’s not a Gofundme campaign.

What should I do if someone is already offering something similar?

Please look at what is available already and consider offering something really distinct. If you’re one of several people offering the same thing, you’re less likely to be in demand…

How should I price my offering?

Your price should reflect your skills and qualifications. If this is a service you have provided before, start with that pricing. If you are offering something you have never done before, we would suggest you err on the side of charging less.

If you would like to offer negotiable/sliding scale pricing for those who need it, feel free to explain this in the description text, and ask supporters to contact you via the chat to negotiate and pay outside the platform (note that off-platform transactions are not subject to our feedback system or oversight).

POSTING AND GETTING HIRED

What should I include in my listing?

Make your pitch snappy! Be very clear about the details of your offering, include good photos, and make sure you list your qualifications and background.

How many listings can I post?

You can post up to two listings at any one time. This may be expanded in the future.

How long will it take before my posting is live?

All listings need to be approved by hireartists.org before they are added to the site. We’ll do our best to get your listings up as soon as possible.

Which video platform do you recommend for online classes or performances? (Zoom, Skype, etc.)

We recommend Zoom or Skype; both offer robust free tiers, but there are some limits on call length and number of participants.

Note the video chat function is not integrated directly into our platform, so please arrange the video calls through the hireartists messages, then initiate them on your own at agreed upon time.

Can I edit my post, change it to offer something else, or remove it completely?

Yes. Once your post is live, you can edit it or remove it. If you are offering a completely different service, we ask that you submit a new post rather than change your existing post.

I already have a scheduling website. Can I share that through this project?

Feel free to link out to your other site in your bio but services on hireartists should ideally be unique and separate from other offerings.

Can I use this to promote another project I’m doing?

We would prefer you didn’t, nor should you use this platform to crowdfund, fundraise, or ask for money other than what you charge for the services offered. But you can mention related projects in your bio to help show who you are and what you do.

Is there a feedback system? What about references?

Please note any professional associations, work experience or awards in your bio to establish your level of experience. There is a feedback function on the site, we ask you to please rate your transactions to help others.

How will I communicate with purchasers? Will they see my personal contact information?

Supporters/purchasers and artists can communicate through the chat functionality in the platform. You do not need to share your personal information with the purchaser, nor they with you. In fact we prefer that you don’t.

Please alert us to any abusive or other misbehavior, and obviously behave yourself as well. If you or the purchaser feels unsafe in any way, we reserve the right to ban either party from the platform after we have reviewed the matter.

What happens if I have a dispute with a supporter/purchaser?

If a dispute arises over a transaction, you will be notified by email, and we will do our best to assist you and the buyer to resolve the issue informally. FAQs for Supporters

GENERAL QUESTIONS

How does this work?

HireArtists is a marketplace for those of us whose livelihood is not threatened to acquire services from dedicated and experienced practitioners who have lost income due to COVID 19.

HireArtists’ practitioners from around the world offer an enormous range of services – some conventional and others less so. Many take advantage of the unique talents of the creative community economically devastated by the virus.

HireArtists is powered by ShareTribe, which allows you to book time slots and search for the kind of service or educational opportunity you need.

Who is this for? Who can post a service or skill?

We have not restricted the services, classes or opportunities offered on hireartists. Many relate to the artistic activity formerly practiced by the artists participating. Many do not. You can

  • Learn a language
  • Sort out your accounts
  • Learn to craft
  • Yoga or other fitness related activities
  • Copy edit
  • Seek custom writing or other visual art practice
  • Website design
  • Video editing

And so on.

The sale, or the offer of sale, of services that are illegal or promote illegal activity, that are sexual in nature, that contain hate speech or symbols or other abuse content cannot be offered.

Please be safe, and respect other people’s boundaries as well.

Where does my money go / does HireArtists take a cut?

We’re not in this for the money. We’re a group of creative professionals trying to help our friends in the community weather this storm. Stripe charges a transaction fee, we take nothing.

Ratings, Refunds, Scheduling

You will be able to rate your classes or offer, and the seller / artist – please do. We would note, while we are moderating the site – we cannot attest to the quality or experience of those making the offer – please do message them and ask about their experience or references before purchasing.

If a dispute arises over a transaction, you can dispute a charge and everyone will be notified by email, and we will do our best to assist you and the buyer to resolve the issue informally.

If you and the buyer are unable to resolve the matter informally, under Hireartists.org’s Policies, Terms and Conditions, you and the seller will be required to resolve your dispute under the Commercial Arbitration Rules and Mediation Procedures of the American Arbitration Association.

Safety

No service or class may be offered that is not delivered entirely remotely (although it could potentially involve sending a finished product to someone by mail etc).

Supporters / purchasers and artists can communicate through the chat functionality in the platform. You do not need to share your personal information with the purchaser, nor they with you. In fact we’d prefer you didn’t.

Please alert us to any abusive or other misbehaviour, and obviously behave yourself as well. If you or the artist feels unsafe in any way, we reserve the right to ban either party from the platform once we’ve reviewed the matter.

If at any point you feel uncomfortable (unless it’s a just stretch too far in your private pilates class…), please immediately let us know. If you or the artist feels unsafe in any way, we reserve the right to ban either party from the platform once we’ve reviewed the matter.

We also have to make it absolutely clear that you not only have to read the Policies, Terms and Conditions, but that by registering on the Hireartists.org site and/or by using the marketplace, you are bound by those Policies, Terms and Conditions.

How can I help?

Please be an amplifier – tell your friends, family and bring more people to use the services. This is a lifeline for the creative community, and you’re an essential part of it.

We absolutely would love your feedback – please email info@moonpool.co.

Finally – please bear with us as we de-bug and get this thing running, and apologies for those bugs, mistakes – and stay healthy, stay home.
